Accessing Lex Machina

Lex Machina should be available to all UNH FP Law users via Lexis+. Select Lex Machina from the menu at the top left of the homepage.

 

Using Lex Machina

Lex Machina offers information on federal district court, selected state court, and PTAB cases. Results can be sorted by issues like case resolutions, damages, and types of remedies, as well as timing of judicial decisions. 

You may also search by Courts & Judges, Counsel, Parties, or specific cases to learn about trends in federal courts, such as the number of cases filed in a particular practice area, or the types of cases typically handled by a judge or law firm.

Lex Machina Data - What's Included?

Lex Machina contains all civil federal district court cases in PACER, except Prisoner Petitions and Social Security cases, pending since 2009.

Lex Machina's basic District Court data comes from the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) systems for each of the 94 district courts and the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML). Lex Machina covers all civil cases in PACER except for Prisoner Petitions (NOS 510, 530, 535, 540, 550, 555, and 560) and Social Security (NOS 861, 862, 863, 864, and 865) cases.

Lex Machina does not have data from appellate courts, including the regional circuit courts, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the Supreme Court.

For state courts, Lex Machina has the case information for all civil cases in each court filed in each court as of January 1st, 2016. Note that they do not have information about criminal, family, or small claims cases. Covered states include California, New York, Delaware, Georgia, Nevada, Texas, and Washington.
