The Occasional Book Review Series

One of the nice things about my work, is that I get to see many of the new books which come into the Law Library.  One recent new book caught my eye, Defense of Justice: Transformational Tales from the Trenches.  Looking it over, I realized that this book had to be included in this blog series -- The Occasional Book Review.

Are you thinking about becoming a public defender after law school? If yes, Defense of Justice is the book for you.  Editors Hon. Leanna K. Weissmann and Abbey Schulz have compiled over fifty first-person accounts of public defenders from around the United States. Each is an inspirational story of defenders who helped free those wrongly accused, defenders who became defenders after they were able to see ‘good guys and bad guys faded to all gray,” and defenders who helped misunderstood students with disabilities thrive with commitment and care.

This book can be read one of two ways. First, you could sit down and finish it in an afternoon.  Or, you could pick it up, open it, and read one random inspirational account when you need a lift—like before your Evidence final.  Civil Rights attorney Bryan Stevenson once said, “Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done." The defendants in the book are complicated folks with messy lives – but folks with inherent worth and dignity who deserve representation. When you read this book, it will give you the boost you need to keep on working and fighting for justice for all.
