This summer, the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law is proud to announce a transformative archival initiative aimed at preserving and celebrating its storied legacy. Under the expert guidance of Jon Cavicchi, with institutional knowledge dating back to 1981, the Gire Archives will undergo a comprehensive reorganization to chronicle the school's rich history and its pioneering role in intellectual property (IP) education. His work builds on the foundation built by Professor Sue Zago and former Librarian Matthew Jenks.
Founded in 1973 by visionary inventor and patent attorney Dr. Robert H. Rines, the Franklin Pierce Law Center—now UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law—was established with a unique focus on intellectual property law. Dr. Rines envisioned a law school that bridged the gap between legal education and technological advancement, a vision that has propelled the institution to national prominence.
Over the past five decades, the school has consistently ranked among the top in IP law education. Notably, it has been recognized as a top 10 IP law program in the United States for more than 25 years, a testament to its enduring commitment to excellence in this specialized field.
The Gire Archives serve as the custodian of the school's historical records, housing a diverse collection that includes:
Foundational Documents: Materials detailing the school's establishment and early development.
Institutional Publications: Issues of IDEA: The Law Review of the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property, a leading journal in the field.
Awards and Honors: Recognitions bestowed upon faculty, alumni, and the institution itself.
Memorabilia: Photographs, paraphernalia, and personal mementos from faculty and alumni that capture the school's vibrant community life.
This archival project builds upon the foundational work of Professor Sue Zago and former Librarian Matthew Jenks, whose dedication laid the groundwork for preserving the school's heritage.
This summer's archival endeavor is more than a preservation project; it's a celebration of the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law's enduring legacy and its unwavering commitment to innovation in legal education. Join us in honoring the past as we look forward to a future built upon the strong foundations of our history.
