Library Rules During Exams

As we head into final exam time, I’d like to take a moment to remind you of the library’s exam rules.

These are different from the rules during the regular semester so, please take a look at them. Exams can be stressful for everyone.  In that regard, laying the ground rules in advance will alleviate any miscommunications in the next few weeks.

Please remember that at night and on weekends, the work-study student at the Library Desk is the authority in charge of the library.  If that Library Desk student asks you to change your behavior you are obligated to comply with the request.  Please contact, Kathy Fletcher if you have a concern about library policy.

Food

Yes!  You can enjoy food in the library.  However, please be mindful of the folks studying around you.  The 3rd-floor IP Reading Room might not be the best place to enjoy a garlic and anchovy pizza (too aromatic) or your Grandma’s peanut brittle (too loud and crunchy).  If the food you’re eating is bothering the folks around you, you may be asked to eat it outside the library, or on a different floor.

Silent Areas

Please study quietly.  During exams, the library’s second floor is no longer the “loud floor.” Quiet conversation is permitted but, please, be considerate of others around you.  Please remember to turn off or silence your cell phone.  Please take your phone calls outside of the library.  Ducking into a stairway or restroom does not mask a conversation, it will only amplify the sound. Earplugs are available at the Reserve/Circulation Desk.

 Study rooms

During exams, there will be no keys given out to individuals for study room use. Study room policy will be strictly enforced during exams.  That rule is three hours per person per day. (e.g.  if Vanilla checks out a key for him, Strawberry, and Chocolate-Swirl from Noon to 3:00, Vanilla should not be joining Pistachio and Sorbet from 7:00-10:00 as he has already had his daily three hours.) All study rooms must be signed out in the three-ring binder at the library desk which will be kept behind the desk during the exam period.  Study rooms are a hot item during exams, and if you are found violating this rule, you may be asked to study outside the library.

Carrels and “Turf”

No carrels are assigned to students.  Please do not leave your possessions in a carrel or on a table to “save” it for yourself.  These library resources are strictly “first come first serve.”

Thank you and Best of Luck on Exams!
