Summer Success: With Help From the Law Library: Westlaw/Lexis/Bloomberg Summer Access

Just in time training, tips, pointers and deep dives on common projects you may get in your summer work.

Westlaw, LexisNexis, BloombergLaw and Casemakerx Summer Use Rules

BloombergLaw, Westlaw Edge, and LexisNexis all have specific rules for summer usage by law students. Details are below for both summer work and for recent graduates. If you are unsure if a use is allowed, please contact your reps or the Law Library directly.

LexisNexis Usage Policies

Summer Access terms:  LexisNexis is available to all UNH Law students once classes end for the semester/academic year, for the summer months of May, June, July and August. LexisNexis believes your participation in a summer associate, internship or clerkship program is a valuable part of your legal education. Your law school IDs can be used for any purpose over the summer, but students should check with their employers first. Some employers would rather students use their firm IDs rather than their law school IDs for billing purposes.

School year terms: Except as related to the Summer Access program as described above, “Academic purposes” do not include research conducted for a law firm, corporation or other entity (other than a professor or law school) that is paying the student to conduct said research or that is passing along the costs of said research to a third party. These are deemed “commercial purposes”.

Students and faculty using their LexisNexis legal education IDs for commercial purposes  (defined above) risk forfeiture of their ID; unless the use occurs during the prescribed period of Summer Access for law students.

Graduates

Graduates may continue to access Lexis with their Lexis student ID, through December 31, 2023. All law students have automatically extended access. There is no need to register, there are no restrictions, and no limits on your research time.

Graduate homepage and a Graduation Gift from LexisNexis

When you sign on to lexisnexis.com/LawSchool after July 1st, you'll see your new Graduate Homepage. Lexis also has a Graduation Gift; you'll be able to choose between four gifts featured on the Graduate Homepage:

Graduate Gift: graduates can select a “Graduate Gift” from the new graduate view of the Law School Home Page. This year’s gifts are LexisNexis eBooks and online subscriptions for Intelligize, Practical Guidance, Lexis for Microsoft Office, or Law360

Additionally, the Graduate Homepage provides access to research resources, videos, career support and breaking legal news.

Please note : Student Rewards will expire

Please redeem all of your LexisNexis Rewards points by June 30th. By July 1st, when the law school homepage switches to the Graduate Homepage, you will no longer see Rewards points. You can earn and redeem Rewards Points until June 30th, but after that date any points you have not redeemed will expire.

Have points but don't know what to do with them? Think about donating them to a charity. For each 271 Points you 'donate', the charity of your choice will receive $4.00.  There are a number of charitable options within the Rewards page and one of them is the UNH Law SBA.

ASPIRE Program: Extended Access for Public Service Work

Plan on doing Public Service work after graduation? The ASPIRE program extends your access to Lexis Advance for 12 months.  Eligibility: All graduates (including December graduates) engaged in verifiable 501(c)(3)* public interest work will qualify. You will need to provide documentation verifying your public interest employment. This could be a letter confirming your start date on organization letterhead. If your employment qualifies, apply for an ASPIRE ID using the form at: www.lexisnexis.com/grad-access

If your graduation date has changed or if you have questions about the Lexis Aspire program please reach out to steven.albro@lexisnexis.com

BloombergLaw Summer Usage

All UNH Law students have unlimited access to BloombergLaw throughout the summer for any type of employment. Graduates have access for 6 months after graduation.

If you've previously registered for BloombergLaw but forgotten your password (hint: your username is your law school email), there is a forgot password feature here that will reset your password.

BloombergLaw contains many unique resources. For example, the robust docket search is superior to Lexis or Westlaw. Additionally, company information, field-specific secondary sources, and extensive analytics all make it worth your time to remember BloomergLaw.
